Power Over

When did we say to ourselves, this is okay. This is acceptable. After all it’s just an animal.

“Just” an “animal”. Why must we always look down upon “those that are different”, don’t speak our language, aren’t the same color, don’t share the same beliefs. And then tell ourselves, that because of these reasons, we somehow have the “right” to have power over “those that are different”.

And it was “just an indian” to the those who killed men, women and children, and forced them off their lands to live a life contrary to their beliefs. And it was “just a jew”, to the nazis in the 2nd world war. Held in concentration camps, starved, made to work as slaves, killed in gas chambers (not much different than how we treat animals). And it was “just a black person” during the 19th century. Brought here on ships, no different than the way we ship livestock today.

Is it because as a child, we are taught to believe these things. Therefore we go through life continuing to do so. Without ever stopping to ask ourselves, is this right? Is this morally just?

Why do we feel that it’s right, to take a Bull, set fire on top of it’s head and torture it to death. Then call that entertainment for the whole family. While another species is suffering right in front of you.

Why do we feel it is okay, to contain animals, and then hunt and kill them for sport. Laughing at the “great shot” your friend might have just made. At the expense of another beings life. To release birds from a box and shoot them as they take flight. “As if” we were merely skeet shooting. Kill a baby bear that has climbed a tree in fear for it’s life, running from hunting dogs. And then whoop and holler as though you just did the greatest thing in the world.

Why do so many people find this okay? Acceptable? When in all reality, the way our world treats animals. A being different from ourselves, who do not speak our language. Or think the way we think. Is no better than what was done to the indians, the jews in concentration camps or the african’s as slaves.

NO BETTER! All share the same planet. All have 2 eyes that see, 2 ears that hear, a nose that smells, a heart that beats, 2 lungs that breath and a mind that thinks! All bleed when injured and feel the pain of that injury. All have emotions, family bonds. Wolves live in family packs. Elephants live in family groups. Birds bond for life. Dolphins swim in groups of family pods. All are different from us. None speak our language.

What possible argument can be given to justify, that the killing, the torture, the exploitation and captivity of for entertainment, the slaughter for fur, euthanasia from overpopulation, slaughters of dolphins, sea lions, seals, "harvest" "taking" "bag limits" and the list is endless. What can possibly be said to convince me that any of this is right? Is just? Is acceptable? And should not stop right this moment! * Dawn Groth *

US Sportsmen's Organization has Double Standards

Based on an article published on the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance.  It appears that what is okay for them.  Is apparently NOT okay for those of us with different beliefs.  The following is their article, my comments will be seen in blue italics.

‘Humane Education’: Why it is not the right thing to do

Posted on April 16, 2013

We believe in animal welfare, not animal rights. There’s a big difference: Animal welfare concerns the prevention of suffering and cruelty to animals; whereas animal rights philosophy advocates an end to all “human use of animals, considering such use “exploitation” of animals. Animal rights activists have gone so far as trying to equate what they call speciesism (“a prejudice or bias in favor of the interests of members of one’s own species and against those of members of other species.”) with racism.
(In the above.  They mention being FOR the prevention of suffering and cruelty to animals.  Okay. If that is true, then how do you explain trapping? Using dogs to hunt animals? )
We are dedicated to the care and well-being of animals and believe in their humane and respectful treatment, however we are opposed to the concept of animal rights. We believe human societies require and accept the use of animals as sources of food and fiber, as well as for scientific research, sport, entertainment and clothing. We live with and love animals while we also eat and wear animal products. We believe animals are good for humans both physically and mentally, and that we need not be ashamed of, nor have to justify human use of animals.
The education-related web pages of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) (http://www.aspcapro.org/service-learning.php), the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) (http://www.humanesocietyyouth.org/) and the Institute for Humane Education (IHE) (http://humaneeducation.org/home/how-ihe-helps-educators/) reveal opposition to many lawful, human activities involving animals: animal agriculture; biomedical research; the use of animals for entertainment or sport including circuses, dog and horse shows and racing, mushing, rodeos, fishing, and hunting; wearing leather and generally any activity that uses animals to benefit humans. All these websites project the message that eating meat, dairy products and fish is cruel and a vegan lifestyle is the answer to ending the suffering of billions of farm animals.
(Again I beg to differ.  Is it Humane and respectful to take an animals life, with the amount of Pleasure  they display in doing so?  Is it respectful to then sit and pose for a photograph holding the dead animals head up, for your moment of pride with the kill?    THEY believe human societies accept the use of animals for scientific research,  (ie... the cat experiments, maternal deprivation of baby monkeys), Frankly, I think the majority of people are now realizing how senseless, time consuming, a waste of tax payer dollars, as well as extreme cruelty beyond belief, these so called "scientific experiments" truly are. Nor do I believe, that the majority of the people agree to the use of animals for Sport or Entertainment.  ie.  Bullfighting, Rodeos, Circus, Trophy Hunting, etc...    I think that people are now becoming more aware of just how cruel these Sports and Entertainment truly are.  And do not support this type of cruelty.  Which again shows the hypocrisy in their first statement, which is that they support prevention of suffering and cruelty to animals.  So far, I have yet to see this.  They have contradicted that statement from the start.)
Whatever one’s personal beliefs regarding the roles of animals in human society, they are views best developed through assimilation of family and community values and adult life experience. Politically charged philosophies regarding the use of animals should not be involuntarily forced upon children and families through indoctrination by organizations with extreme agendas that are incompatible with mainstream American values. These organizations should not have unfettered access to impressionable children.
(Whoa.  And this one is loaded!  Here we have the double standards.  Where do I begin?!  Politically charged philosophies regarding animals should not be involuntarily forced upon children and families through indoctrination by organizations with extreme agendas.  WOW!  Let me start with, The Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation!   Whom Lobby and Pressure the rest of Capitol Hill to see things "Their way"  so that everyone is on the "same page"  This political organization is a non-profit hunting group made up of our Senators, Congressmen, Governors and state legislators.  Now, what was that comment again about forcing opinions via groups with extreme agendas?   DOUBLE STANDARD!    Then let us take a look at the very organization who posted this article.  The U.S. Sportsmen's Organization.  Another group with an Extreme Agenda.  And this one Targeting our children.   This organization has managed to work their way into just about every youth organization we have for our kids.  So our kids are being taught at the young age of 10 years old, first, how to shoot guns and firearm safety,  (as if this is a necessary skill for life!) which then leads on to how to Hunt and kill animals.  Again, is this a necessary skill they need for life?  Isn't this having unfettered access to impressionable children?!  To teach a child to hunt and kill an animal, creates in them a detachment on the value of life. They are desensitized to killing at such a young age, that killing could then become the answer, the solution to any problems they encounter. Just as it seems to be with the adults today, who were taught as young children.  And because they are conditioned at a very young age to kill, killing becomes 2nd nature to them. Another DOUBLE STANDARD!)
Further, we should not permit our youth to be indoctrinated with a negative view of ethnic or regional cultures. For example, the indigenous peoples of Alaska and other Native Americans hunt and trap animals for food. We should not foster intolerance of their cultures on the part of impressionable youth. Instead our children should be taught to understand and respect fully the diversity of the American experience, its history and its mix of highly varied cultures across the full spectrum of our society. “Humane Education” as its protagonists would teach it would do just the opposite.
(Now here I believe they are trying to spread a false message.  I don't believe that the majority of decent animal rights organizations are out to change the way of life of indigenous cultures and native americans.  Let alone teach a negative view of these people.)
Though it may seem unlikely that we as animal lovers and welfare advocates would oppose proposals to teach “humane education” to children, when the intentions of animal rights organizations are revealed, it’s clear why we are taking this stand. We believe decisions about the use of animals should be made with respect for the dignity of human and animal life, and where appropriate, by applying science, rather than emotion to decision-making about our society’s treatment of animals. So-called “humane education” represents an effort to indoctrinate youth in the ideology of animal extremism and should be rejected.
(I believe the majority of "their" article pretty much shattered any possible view of them as animal lovers and welfare advocates, unless of course they are referring only to cats and dogs.  And even there, I see a contradiction.  For those who believe in using dogs to hunt animals. The injuries to the dogs is extreme cruelty as well as to the animal attacked.  The following statement they make . . .( We believe decisions about the use of animals should be made with respect for the dignity of human and animal life, and where appropriate, by applying science, rather than emotion to decision-making about our society’s treatment of animals.)   Decisions made with respect and dignity, yes we see that in all the videos they post of which I will include some examples, as well as the photographs of them proudly displaying the animal they just killed.  Or of course let us not forget, they even proudly display the head of that animal as a trophy on the wall of their home!  Much respect and dignity yes!   And again, they like to say, applying science, rather than emotion.  I have yet to see any true science backing up these decisions they make.  In fact, I can tell you very well why they want to fight so hard against us.  That is, they do not want to lose their legal ability to go out and kill animals.  Period.  There is no science behind that.  The only science they use are fixed, based on keeping their "game species" alive and well for the Hunt to continue!
We need your help. As extremist animal rights activist organizations ramp up their campaign for “humane education,” please notify us if you see this legislation surface in your community or state. And please help us educate legislators and school boards about the underlying messages and intent. Let them know that you support the humane treatment of animals, but not the animal rights extremism embodied in “humane education.”
(Okay...  there is no extremism in humane education. There is nothing wrong with teaching children what animals are all about.  How they live in family groups, how they bond, how they feel emotions, pain, grief, saddness, happiness.  There is nothing wrong, with teaching our children the truth of what animals are all about.  That is humane education.  Not extremism.   There is no underlying message whatsoever.  And the only thing they are concerned about.  Is that children may very well decide they do not want to hunt and kill animals.  So maybe these school boards should be educated on the following.  I have a list of videos, made by these Hunters.  Which basically speak for themselves.)

Politicians Push Hunting Agenda

ALASKA - State of Aerial Gunning of our Wolves. Even though the majority of the people have voted time and again against this. It continues. Why?

For one... The Hunters in Alaska now have a monopoly in the government for this state. 2 Senators, the 1 and only Congressman and the Governor. And how do you think their votes will go on Bill's to be passed?

The Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation. Is made up of politicians from all but 3 of our 50 States. They currently have Half the vote on Capitol Hill. This needs to Change! We need to start working on whose really in this group truly because they are Hunters? And who is in this group, simply because they were bribed, bought and paid for? In the video I posted of Jon Tester's speech, he states himself. They are going to Lobby hard and pressure the rest of Capitol Hill to be on the same page. To see things the way THEY DO!

Senator Jon Tester Speech:

We live in a world where there is simply far far far too much violence. The following Is a video by the man who slipped a Ryder into the Budget Bill. A Ryder that in congress did not get a special up or down vote. Just slipped on through as though it were part of the budget. And therefore got signed into law and the slaughter of our wolves began.

Let’s take a look a Jon Tester’s speech…. I will not pull anything out of this video, so someone can come along and say I took this and that out of context. I am showing you this short clip in it’s entirety of 3:45 minutes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBuyPksi3-U&list=PLYwwTTVnA6kweGmILTUMUiyc7BRdNxNi1&index=4

I will point out as he goes along. Comments on what he is saying.
Right from the beginning, he starts off his speech, which clearly was meant to discuss Hunting. With the word access, and you will note that this will be emphasized throughout his speech. Access, meaning access to Hunters who want to get out on these lands to Kill our wildlife.

From the start he mentions how big of a business this is. Billions of dollars in money and jobs. I believe here he may be speaking of the industry of selling all the guns, equipment, special clothing outfits that are worn, etc. Along with license fees, and whatever else is charged for the so called “Sport” of hunting. Keep in mind hunting is not the only thing that can create money and jobs.

There are many, many real sports that also need equipment bought, special clothing, gear, etc. Things such as camping, white water rafting, hiking, mountain climbing, and the list can go on.
He then goes in to mention that he is Chairman of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus. We now know of course that Sportsmen is just another term for Hunters. And that there is a special “non-profit” group created by Hunter politicians. Called the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation. He speaks of how this Political group is moving forward with a strong prioritized plan, to apply pressure, and try to get everyone in congress on the same page. That page being, the Hunter’s mindset and their agenda. At 1:19, he states “getting folks to make the right decision” (I have to ask, right decision for who? Hunters? Our wildlife? The people in general? As what we see here is someone lobbying hard for the Hunter’s and their so called “Heritage”. Their so called “right” to go out and kill our wildlife. Where are those people who should be lobbying for the right of us who do NOT want to see hunters killing our wildlife?)

He then goes on to speak of habitat. For a ‘Viable” wildlife population. So he speaks of funding for the Land water conservation and the mine cleanup acts. That both need funding. Not for the sake of the necessity of these issues alone. Not for the necessity of very much needed habitat for our wildlife. But for the necessity of keeping a “viable wildlife population”. For then he goes on to the real purpose. The Access, as I noted at the beginning of this little speech. Access for Hunters to go out on the ground, and hunt and kill our animals. (I have to ask Why is it so important for sportsmen to be able to go out and (enjoy) killing our wildlife?) They will tell you it is to Conserve the wildlife. To manage the wildlife. That our wildlife will Starve if we do not kill them. That they will run out onto the roads and get hit by cars, if we do not kill them.

Nature takes care of itself if left alone, without interference from man. The endangered species list was even necessary to begin with because “men” have been killing them to extinction.

He then moves on to speaking of the Hunting Heritage. And how a Shooting range Bill is going to help increase this heritage. As he benignly speaks of how it’s an important thing to allow more ranges out there on the land to teach gun safety. However that is not the real reason behind this. As you will note he says slightly under his breath, teaching people the ability to shoot so they can get out there and hunt. So when he speaks of wildlife conservation needing funding. That it’s an investment that Pays back. In his mind, the payback, is the ability to go out and enjoy the land, to hunt and kill the wildlife that they set up this habitat for, that they want access to more public lands to do. I’m all for funding for more habitat. Funding to help our environment and our wildlife. But NOT for the sake of hunters to go out and kill.

So I have another question, if this is a billion dollar industry, why do they need funding? And why should we fund Hunters, so they can continue killing our wildlife. They claim this is wildlife management. Conservation of the species. So again I’m a bit confused here. For now I am going to go back to my very first statement. There is far far far too much violence in our world.

Conservation of the species according to a Hunter. Is Mass killing of omnivore species, that eat the species they wish to go out and Hunt for enjoyment. For recreation, for sport. They will of course use any excuse as to why this species needs to be killed. For instance, the wolf, stating, the wolves are killing their ranch animals, the wolves are a danger to people. Anything they have to say, without any credible back up. To get the results they want. Again, referring to my statement of far too much violence. Why is it, the solution to a hunters problem is to go out and Kill. I would think, personally, that the reason for this is due to the fact they were taught at a very young age. To Hunt and Kill animals. This done to a child creates a person in our world where killing is far too easy a thing to do. They are desensitized to killing at such a young age, it becomes 2nd nature to them. So that killing always becomes the answer, the solution to the problems they encounter.

And so I say, who is speaking for those of us who want to see these habitats created. Access to public lands for the people. But for the sake of our environemnt and the planet. For the sake of the wildlife to have a place to live and run freely. For the sake of wanting to hike through the forests, to go wildlife watching and take photographs and enjoy the outdoors and fresh air and this planets natural beauty and all it has to offer that man has not yet destroyed. Who is lobbying or speaking for this?

As a people. We are now living in the 21st century. The year 2013. Not the days of pioneers where people truly lived off the land to survive. By now we should be a more civilized society. Who seeks non-lethal means to an issue first and foremost. Not mass killing of a species because we consider them to be a nuisance, a pest, interfering with the so called “Sport” they wish to enjoy!

I think the time for this type of mindset is and should be long long past. History. No longer a part of who we are as a people. For you look at our history. And all the violence that has gone by. Do we truly want this so called “Heritage” to be passed on to our children? To create yet more violent people for our future. More people, who believe killing is the answer.
